Fabulous Firsts

Nolan's Firsts
Nolan has been so much fun this month. June 5th he turned six months and it seems like he's learning or experiencing something new every day. Here are some of his recent firsts:

-Just yesterday he rolled over for the first time. Both Bob and I were actually there to witness the accomplishment. He was super proud of himself for a few seconds, looked at us like "Look what I did!", then started whining because he hates being on his tummy.

-Nolan sits up like a champ now. He still falls occasionally, but he's lovin' it. And sitting allows him to PLAY more. It's so cute to watch. Funny thing is -- he still loves to play with Matthew's big dinosaur Spike. It's almost as big as he is, but he loves him.

-He said his first word! "Mum-mum" So, so sweet to hear him call me deliberately.

-He learned how to lift up his arms and reach for us. Nothing can beat that, especially paired with him babbling my name.

-While we were in Tennessee visiting Shari, we spent an afternoon at the pool. Nolan had his first swim. The water was pretty chilly, so he looked a little apprehensive at first. (But so did I!) Once he was in, he loved it.

-I usually give Nolan his baths in a blue baby tub in our kitchen sink. It's not one of his favorite things. He's usually pretty tricky - complaining and arching his body out of the water. I always rush through it. While we were away, I had to wash him in regular bathtubs. He loved it! He sat straight up and acted like he'd been doing it for years. Matthew was nervous of the big tub until he was over a year. Just goes to show you can't assume anything about your kids will be similar!

Matthew's Firsts
Just because you happen to be 3 1/2 doesn't mean you've run out of firsts. Here are some of Matthew's recent ones:

-He wore his first Burger King crown and declared, "I'm Matthew, king of the wild!!!"

-He ate his first hot dog. Barely. And after much coaxing. But still -- any new food is momentous.

-He slept in a sleeping bag for the first time! Having read many books about camp-outs and sleepovers, he was very excited to experience a real sleeping bag for himself. Thanks to Aunt Shari and Uncle Mark and our surprise trip to Tennessee.

-This one is my favorite: He memorized his first Bible verse! He learned it at church, came home and quoted it perfectly. He even remembered the reference. Three weeks later, he still LOVES to say it. "Go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone." Mark 16:15.

Tonight he asked to learn another one. We picked I John 1:5 "God is light; in him is no darkness at all." Partly because we had talked about that one before and partly because it's one of my favorites. This is an exciting time. Soaking up truth and hungry for more.

Yay for firsts, seconds, thirds. Yay for everyday precious moments with my two sweet boys.
